Physics

College of Science

Purdue physics is one of the largest programs in the nation, but classes average 30 or fewer students. Every first-year student has the opportunity to be paired with a faculty mentor as well as a peer mentor. Undergraduate research is strongly encouraged. On-campus internships are available as early as second semester, and the department has research internship arrangements with more than 100 off-campus sites. There are specialization options including:

Applied Physics
Physics
Physics Teaching
Physics/Materials Science Engineering (dual major)

Points of Pride

  • The department offers undergraduate research opportunities in experimental and theoretical condensed matter physics, high energy physics, nano-physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics, biological physics, geophysics, relativity, and interdisciplinary areas of material science, engineering, or computational science.
  • Our graduates have an exceptional record of accomplishment in many areas of research and teaching and in a wide variety of settings, including academia and major industrial and government labs.

Careers:

Approximately half of physics graduates enter graduate school in areas including physics, engineering, medicine, geology, and management. However, many graduates go directly into the workforce in jobs as process designers and engineers, systems analysts, patent examiners, exploration geophysicists, orbital mechanics physicists, and national accelerator physicists.
