Family and Consumer Sciences Education

College of Consumer and Family Sciences

Family and Consumer Sciences Education prepares students to be professional educators in areas related to individual and family life. This major includes coursework from all four CFS departments: Child Development and Family Studies, Consumer Sciences and Retailing, Foods and Nutrition, and Hospitality and Tourism Management. Students develop critical and creative thinking ability as well as a broad perspective in food service, nutrition, parenting, child development, relationships, personal finance, consumer economics, business, education, and leadership.

Points of Pride

  • Students benefit from extensive field experiences in schools and community agencies, which begin as early as the second semester.
  • Students complete a full semester of student teaching in two classroom settings - junior high and high school.
  • Students within the College of Consumer and Family Sciences can enhance their educational experience through participation in academic organizations such as the Indiana Association of Family and Consumer Sciences.

Careers:

All Family and Consumer Sciences Education graduates are licensed to teach in middle and high school family and consumer sciences programs. They also have career opportunities with community human service agencies, businesses, and the Cooperative Extension Service. Job opportunities are very strong for graduates, and job openings are expected to exceed the supply of new teachers in Indiana and nationwide for the next several years.
