In their first two years, biological sciences students take a common core of biology courses and labs in ecology, diversity, evolution, organismal biology, cell biology, molecular biology, and genetics. In the third and fourth years, they can specialize in one of 10 different majors. At any one time, there are typically 80-100 undergraduates working with faculty on cutting-edge biology research. Biology majors include:

  • Biochemistry
  • Biology
  • Biology teaching
  • Cell, molecular, and developmental biology
  • Ecology, evolution, and environmental biology
  • Genetic biology
  • Microbiology
  • Neurobiology and physiology

Points of Pride

  • Large number of undergraduates involved in undergraduate research each semester
  • Several teaching award-winners teach in biology
  • Graduates are highly respected by employers, graduate schools, and professional schools

Careers:

Many undergraduate biology students proceed directly to graduate school in biology or biology-related fields.  Others go on to schools of medicine, veterinary medicine, or dentistry.  Still others go directly to work in a broad variety of fields. These include research or applied science positions in biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and chemical industries. Some become high school teachers, go into sales, or work for governmental regulatory agencies, zoos, or parks.
